Omar Khayyam was renowned in his own lifetime for his scientific knowledge, but nowadays he is better known for his poetry in The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam ( first published in 1859).Omar Khayyam Born in Nishapur, Persia, Omar Khayyam was well educated and one of his first works was an influential piece on algebra. After a pilgrimage to Mecca, the religious capital of the Muslim world, Omar Khayyam became astronomer to the sultan, and revised the Muslim calender.
