Begum Khaleda Zia

Begum Khaleda Zia

Begum Khaleda Zia
Begum Khaleda Zia was born to Iskandar Majumder, a businessman, and Taiyaba Majumdar at Dinajpur district in northwestern Bangladesh in 1945. In 1960, she got married to Ziaur Rahman ,Her husband , one of the prominent heroes of the country’s liberation war, later became the President of the Republic and formed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)
Until the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman in an abortive military coup in Chittagong on 30 May 1981, Khaleda Zia had taken little interest in either politics or republic life. Even when her husband was propelled to power after the political changes in 1975, she reminded a shy and withdrawn housewife who devoted most of her time grooming up her two sons.

After the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman, his Vice-President Justice Abdus Sattar took over as the acting President and also the Chairman of the BNP which the slain president founded in 1978, Within four months of the presidential election in November 1981, the then Chief of Army Staff General H.M. Ershad overthrew Justice Sattar and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party government. On 24 March 1982, he proclaimed martial law.

In March 1983, Justice Sattar appointed Khaleda Zia a vice-chairman of BNP. On February 1984, she became the chairperson as Justice Sattar retired from politics. On 10 August the same year, the party elected her the chairperson. Meanwhile, BNP formed a seven-party alliance in September 1983 to step up movement against the autocratic regime of General Ershad. Khaleda Zia was detained seven times during almost nine years of autocratic rule. In the face of mass upsurge spearheaded by Begum Khaleda Zia led seven party alliance and the eight-party combine led by Hasina, President Ershad resigned on 6 December 1990. He handed over power to a neutral caretaker government, bringing an end to his nine-year autocratic rule. In 1991, she became the country’s first woman Prime Minister through a free and fair general election on 27 February 1991 and formed the government.

Khaleda Zia
She became Prime Minister for the second consecutive term after the BNP had a landslide victory I 15 February 1996 general elections to the sixth Jatiya Sangsad. The election was, however, boycotted by all other major parties. In the 12 June 1996 polls, BNP lost to Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League but emerged as the largest opposition party in the country’s parliamentary history with 116 seats. The BNP restored the parliamentary system through the 12th amendment to the Constitution in 1991 and introduced the Caretaker Government through13th amendment to the Constitution in 1996.

When in power, the government of Khaleda Zia made considerable progress in the education sector, introducing compulsory free primary education, free education for girls up to class ten, stipend for the girl students and food for education programme. It also increased the age-limit for entry into government services from 27 years to 30 years and made highest budgetary allocation in the education sector.

Aiming to return to power, the BNP formed a four-party opposition alliance on 6 January 1999 with the Jatiya Party, the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Islami Oiky aJote and launched several agitation programmes against the rulling Awami League. The alliance then participated in the 1 October general election and won the polls with a two-third majority and Khaleda Zia was once again sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

About Kate Winslet

About Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet
Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born on October 5th, 1975 in Reading, England. Her height is 5’8”; the clour of the hair is Blonde, The clour of the eyes are Blue-green (hazel). She was born into a family of people in the theatre, and it seemed to Kate that it was the natural thing to do to go into it. Her first role ever was the Virgin Mary, at age 5. From that point on, she had caught the acting bug. She attended Red roofs, a performing arts school in Maidenhead, until age 16. Kate’s first job was in a Sugar Puffs cereal commercial. After that, she appeared in a few television series. On one of them, Dark Season, she met Stephan Tredre, many years her senior, who became Kate’s first real love interest. They were together for quite some time, and continued to be extremely close. Stephan passed away in December, of cancer, causing Kate Winslet to miss the Hollywood premier of Titanic.

During her childhood, and into her teen years, Kate’s 5’6” frame weighed as much as 185 pounds, which led to her to acquire the nickname “Blubber” in school. Her weight has since become a non-issue in my opinion, but one that still causes her to get press about. Personally, one of the reasons why I like Kate is that she looks like a normal person, not someone who looks like they have been stranded on a desert island for five months eating nothing but berries and moss. Anyway, Kate’s first movie role was in Heavenly Creatures, the much acclaimed New Zealand film about the true story of two girls whose relationship becomes so close that it causes them to do a drastic thing to be together. Kate plays one of those girls, Juliet Hulme. After Heavenly Creatures in 1994, Kate Winslet had a role in Disney’s A Kid in King Arthur’s Court, as Princess Sarah and her Oscar-nominated role a Marianne 1995. She followed up with the part of sue Bridgehead in Jude and Ophelia in Kenneth Branagh’s wondrous Hamlet.

Currently, Kate has the starring role in James Cameron’s amazing, heart-wrenching, wonderful Titanic, as Rose Dewitt Bukater, the 17-year old wild beauty trapped in the heart of Philadelphia high society. Kate got a second Oscar nomination for her part as Rose. Kate Winslet also received a nomination for best actress from the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Kate’s future projects include a movie called Hideous Kinky, which is set to be released in June 1998. Kate stars as a young British mother of two in the 1960’s who is traveling around Morocco with her two young daughters. Kate Elizabeth Winslet also slated to do a new film with Director Jane Campion called Holy Smoke.
